Silva Global

When a large Sydney residential project found itself without a reliable coupler supplier, Silva stepped in to deliver the Dextra Fortec® rebar splicing system — on time and to specification — keeping the schedule on track.

A project that couldn’t afford delays

Large-scale construction projects run on tight schedules. So when a significant residential development in Sydney ran into trouble sourcing couplers and threaded bar, the risk of disruption to their build sequence was real.

The project’s construction team reached out to Silva. We moved quickly to confirm stock, coordinate logistics, and Silva stepped in and solved the problem, supplying high volume Fortec® couplers and threaded bar within 3 to 4 months, with no further disruption to the build.

What is the Dextra Fortec® system?

Fortec® is a parallel threaded mechanical rebar splicing system designed for reinforcing bars from Ø12 to 50 mm (ASTM #4 to #18). It replaces traditional lap splicing with a stronger, faster, and more space-efficient connection — and installation requires no torque wrench.

REBAR PREPARATION: A 3-STEP PROCESS

01 Cutting

02 Cold Forging

03 Threading

The bar end is cut square at 90° for a clean, consistent face.

Dextra’s patented cold forging process enlarges the bar end without removing material, preserving full cross-sectional area.

The enlarged end is threaded to the required length, ready for coupler connection.

Splicing configurations for every situation

A single Fortec® standard coupler covers the full range of common site conditions — from straightforward rotational connections to complex position splices where neither bar can be turned. Transition couplers handle different bar diameters, and bridging splices solve the gap between bars that can’t be brought end to end.

1. Standard Splice (Type A) Simple rotation to full thread engagement.

Parallel threading eliminates cross-threading risk.

2. Position Splice (Type B & C)

Used when bars can’t be rotated. Type C adds a lock nut to fix the continuation bar in position.

3. Bridging & Transition

Connects bars across gaps or between different diameters  no advance planning needed for transitions.

4. Headed Bars

End anchor alternative to hooked bars, ideal for congested reinforcement zones.

KEY TECHNICAL BENEFITS

• No reduction in bar cross-section area across the splice

• No torque wrench required

• Allows full ductile elongation of reinforcing bars

• Type 2 coupler — suitable for seismic design zones

• Tested under reverse cyclic loading conditions

• Eliminates bar congestion associated with lap splice zones

• Individually marked for full material traceability
